r = 0 for the given X, Y data (Karl Pearson's method); OR: Laspeyre's Price Index = 103.94.

Main question — Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation:

X : −3, −2, −1, 1, 2, 3 Y : 9, 4, 1, 1, 4, 9 (n = 6)

XYXYX²Y²
−39−27981
−24−8416
−11−111
11111
248416
3927981
ΣX=0ΣY=28ΣXY=0ΣX²=28ΣY²=196

Karl Pearson's formula:

r = [NΣXY − ΣX·ΣY] / √{[NΣX² − (ΣX)²][NΣY² − (ΣY)²]}

Numerator = 6(0) − (0)(28) = 0

Denominator = √{[6(28) − 0²][6(196) − 28²]} = √{[168][1176−784]} = √{168 × 392} = √65856 ≈ 256.6

r = 0 / 256.6 = 0

(This makes sense: Y rises symmetrically as X moves away from 0 in either direction (Y behaves like X²), so there is a strong non-linear relationship, but no linear correlation at all, giving r = 0.)
