The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures changes, over a period of time, in the general level of retail prices of a fixed 'basket' of goods and services typically consumed by a particular group of consumers.

The CPI (also called the cost-of-living index) tracks how much it costs, over time, for a specific class of consumers (e.g. industrial workers, agricultural labourers, urban non-manual employees) to purchase a fixed basket of commodities and services they typically consume — covering items such as food, fuel, clothing, housing/rent and miscellaneous expenses.
