The empirical formula Mode = 3 × Median − 2 × Mean was given by Karl Pearson.

In a perfectly symmetrical (normal) distribution, Mean = Median = Mode. In practice, most real-world distributions are not perfectly symmetrical. Karl Pearson observed that in a moderately skewed distribution the distance between the mean and the mode is approximately three times the distance between the mean and the median. This observation is expressed as the empirical relationship:

Mean − Mode = 3 (Mean − Median)

which, on rearrangement, gives:

Mode = 3 Median − 2 Mean, i.e. Mo = 3Me − 2x̄
