Metamerism is the repeated linear segmentation of the body, both external and internal, exemplified by the earthworm (Annelida).

Metamerism (also called segmentation) refers to the phenomenon in which the body of an animal is organised into a linear series of similar, repeating units called metameres or segments, arranged one after another along the main body axis (anterior to posterior). In truly metameric animals, this segmentation is reflected not just externally (visible rings/segments on the body surface) but also internally, in the repeated arrangement of organs such as nephridia (excretory organs), nerve ganglia, and muscles in each segment.
