The air bladder is a buoyancy-regulating gas-filled sac found in bony fishes but absent in cartilaginous fishes, allowing bony fish to maintain depth without continuous swimming.

Class Osteichthyes (bony fishes, e.g. Labeo, Catla, Exocoetus, Hippocampus) is characterised by an endoskeleton made of bone, and most members possess an air bladder (also called a swim bladder) — an internal gas-filled sac located in the body cavity. By regulating the amount of gas in this bladder, the fish can control its buoyancy: increasing gas volume makes the fish more buoyant (rises), while decreasing it makes the fish sink. This allows bony fish to remain suspended at a given depth in water with minimal muscular effort, saving energy compared to constant active swimming.
