Mammals rank as the most advanced animal class due to their large, complex brain, an efficient warm-blooded circulatory/respiratory system, and milk-based parental care that boosts offspring survival.

Mammals are generally regarded as the most highly evolved and advanced class of animals for several key reasons:

  1. Highly developed brain: Mammals possess the largest and most complex brains relative to body size among animals, with a well-developed cerebrum (often with a folded cerebral cortex/neocortex in higher mammals). This allows for sophisticated behaviour, learning, memory, problem-solving and, in some species, advanced social behaviour and intelligence.

  2. Efficient, warm-blooded physiology: Mammals are homeothermic (warm-blooded), maintaining a constant internal body temperature regardless of the external environment, which allows sustained high metabolic activity. They have a four-chambered heart providing complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood (double circulation), and a muscular diaphragm that enables efficient lung ventilation — together supporting a high, stable metabolic rate.

  3. Mammary glands and parental care: A defining mammalian feature is the presence of mammary glands, which produce milk to nourish the young after birth. Most mammals are viviparous (give birth to live young rather than laying eggs) and provide prolonged parental care and protection, which significantly increases the survival rate of the offspring compared to many other animal groups.
