Zinc functions as a cofactor for several enzymes, being essential either for the enzyme's catalytic activity or for maintaining its correct three-dimensional structure.

Many enzymes are not catalytically active on their own — they need a non-protein helper called a cofactor bound to them. Cofactors can be inorganic ions (like Zn2+, Mg2+, Mn2+) or organic molecules (coenzymes). Without its correct cofactor, such an enzyme (called an apoenzyme in that state) cannot catalyse its reaction.
