DNA and RNA are both nucleic acids, but they differ in their sugar component, one of their nitrogenous bases, their strand structure, their biological role, and their chemical stability.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) are both polymers of nucleotides but differ in several important ways:

  1. Sugar component: DNA contains deoxyribose sugar (which lacks an -OH at the 2' carbon), while RNA contains ribose sugar (which has an -OH at the 2' carbon). This single difference gives RNA its name and affects its chemical reactivity.
  2. Nitrogenous bases: Both share adenine, guanine and cytosine, but DNA uses thymine as its fourth base, while RNA uses uracil in place of thymine.
  3. Number of strands: DNA is typically double-stranded, forming the well-known double helix held together by base pairing (A-T, G-C) between the two strands. RNA is typically single-stranded, though it can fold back on itself to form local double-stranded regions (e.g., in tRNA).
  4. Biological function: DNA is the primary hereditary material in almost all organisms, storing genetic information stably across generations. RNA mainly acts as an intermediary in protein synthesis — messenger RNA (mRNA) carries the genetic code from DNA, transfer RNA (tRNA) brings amino acids, and ribosomal RNA (rRNA) forms part of the ribosome; RNA is the genetic material only in certain viruses (e.g., retroviruses). …
