Fibrinogen, a soluble plasma protein, is converted by thrombin into insoluble fibrin threads that form the mesh of a blood clot.

Blood coagulation is a cascade of enzymatic reactions ending in the conversion of the soluble plasma protein fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin. When a blood vessel is injured, a series of clotting factors activate prothrombin to thrombin, and thrombin in turn converts fibrinogen into fibrin monomers that polymerise into long, insoluble threads.
