Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles rich in acid hydrolases, used for intracellular digestion.

Lysosomes are spherical, single-membrane-bound vesicles formed by the packaging of hydrolytic enzymes made in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and processed/packaged by the Golgi apparatus. These enzymes are collectively called acid hydrolases because they include a wide range of hydrolytic enzymes (lipases, proteases, carbohydrases, nucleases, etc.) that function optimally in the acidic environment (low pH) maintained inside the lysosome.
