Catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) are called emergency hormones because they are released rapidly during stress and trigger a set of physiological changes that prepare the body for immediate action ('fight or flight').

The adrenal medulla, the inner part of the adrenal gland, secretes two catecholamine hormones — adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine) — in response to any stressful or emergency situation (fear, danger, excitement, etc.), a response often called the 'fight-or-flight' response.

These hormones bring about a coordinated set of rapid physiological changes that prepare the body to cope with the emergency:

  1. Cardiovascular effects: increase in heart rate and force of contraction, and a rise in blood pressure, ensuring more blood is pumped quickly to vital organs.
  2. Metabolic effects: stimulation of glycogenolysis (breakdown of glycogen to glucose) in the liver and muscles, rapidly increasing blood glucose levels to provide readily available energy.
  3. Blood flow redistribution: constriction of blood vessels supplying less essential organs (like the skin and digestive tract) and dilation of vessels supplying essential organs (heart, brain, skeletal muscles), redirecting blood to where it is needed most urgently.
  4. Respiratory effects: dilation of the bronchioles (bronchodilation), improving oxygen intake. …
