The pectoral girdle loosely attaches the forelimbs to the trunk for flexibility, whereas the pelvic girdle is rigidly fused to the vertebral column to bear body weight and support the hindlimbs.

Each half of the pectoral girdle consists of a clavicle (collar bone) and a scapula (shoulder blade). This girdle is attached to the axial skeleton only indirectly, mainly through muscles, and is not rigidly fused to the vertebral column — this loose attachment allows the shoulder and forelimb a wide range of movement.
