Plasmogamy is the first step of sexual reproduction in fungi — the merging of the cytoplasm of two gamete cells while their two nuclei stay distinct, side by side, in the same cell.

In fungal sexual reproduction, two compatible gametes (or hyphal cells) come together and their cell membranes fuse, allowing their cytoplasmic contents to mix — this is plasmogamy. At this stage, the two haploid nuclei from the two parent cells do NOT fuse; they simply lie together in the common cytoplasm.
