Fermentation:
- Occurs in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic process); glucose is only partially oxidised (broken down incompletely).
- Yields a comparatively small amount of energy — a net gain of only about 2 ATP molecules per glucose molecule (from glycolysis alone, since the pyruvate is not further oxidised through the Krebs cycle/electron transport chain).

Aerobic respiration:
- Occurs in the presence of oxygen; glucose is completely oxidised, via glycolysis, the Krebs (citric acid) cycle, and the electron transport chain/oxidative phosphorylation.
