Steel is more elastic than rubber: it resists deformation more strongly (higher Young's modulus), even though rubber can stretch further.

A common misconception is that a material that can stretch a lot (like rubber) is "more elastic." But elasticity, as defined in physics, is a measure of how strongly a material resists being deformed and how effectively it produces a restoring stress for a given strain — it is quantified by the modulus of elasticity (e.g., Young's modulus Y=Stress/StrainY = \text{Stress}/\text{Strain}), not by how much a material can stretch before breaking.

For the same applied stress, steel deforms (strains) far less than rubber does — steel's Young's modulus is roughly 2×1011 N/m22\times10^{11}\ N/m^2, about a thousand times larger than rubber's modulus (∼108 N/m2\sim10^{8}\ N/m^2 or lower). This means steel more strongly resists a given deforming stress, and produces a much larger restoring stress for a given (small) strain, compared to rubber.
