A dimensional equation expresses any physical quantity as a product of powers of the base dimensions M, L, T (and others where needed).

Every physical quantity can be expressed as a combination of the fundamental (base) dimensions of mass (M), length (L), time (T), and — where required — temperature (K), electric current (A), etc. Writing a physical quantity equal to its dimensional formula gives its dimensional equation.

For example:

  • Velocity: [v]=[M0L1T−1][v] = [M^0 L^1 T^{-1}]
  • Force: [F]=[M1L1T−2][F] = [M^1 L^1 T^{-2}]
  • Energy: [E]=[M1L2T−2][E] = [M^1 L^2 T^{-2}]

The general form is [Q]=[MaLbTc][Q] = [M^a L^b T^c], where a,b,ca, b, c are the powers to which the base dimensions must be raised to represent the quantity QQ.
