A Quantitative Standard is any control benchmark expressible in numbers — e.g., a monthly sales target in rupees.

In the controlling process, the first step is to set standards of performance against which actual results will later be compared. Standards can be quantitative (expressed in measurable, numerical terms such as units, money, time or percentage) or qualitative (expressed in terms that are harder to measure numerically, such as goodwill or employee morale).

Examples of quantitative standards include:

  • A sales target of Rs. 10 lakh for the month.
  • A production target of 500 units per day.
  • A cost target of not more than Rs. 50 per unit produced.
  • Completion of a project within 6 months. …
