Before F.W. Taylor introduced scientific management, managers and supervisors decided how a job should be done and how much a worker should produce purely on the basis of their own personal experience, intuition and trial-and-error — not on any scientifically measured standard. This unscientific, trial-and-error way of working is traditionally called the 'Rule of thumb', and it is also known as the Hit and miss method, because a method was tried, and if it happened to work it was kept; if it did not, another was tried, with no systematic study behind the choice.
