Biopiracy is the exploitation of a nation's genetic/biological resources and its people's traditional knowledge without permission or benefit-sharing, often through unfair patents.

As nations became aware of the immense commercial value of their biodiversity and the traditional knowledge associated with using it, many developed-world organisations began patenting and using such biological material and knowledge without the consent of, or payment to, the country or communities of origin. This is called biopiracy.
