Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke binds haemoglobin more strongly than oxygen, reducing oxygen transport — so smoking causes oxygen deficiency.

Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide (CO) and nicotine. Haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying pigment of blood, has a much higher affinity for CO than for oxygen (about 200 times). When a person smokes, CO binds haemoglobin to form stable carboxyhaemoglobin, so that much less haemoglobin is available to bind and transport oxygen.
