B-lymphocytes make antibodies (humoral immunity) and T-lymphocytes carry out cell-mediated immunity and help B-cells — together giving specific defence against a pathogen.

Specific (acquired) immunity against a particular pathogen is carried out by two kinds of lymphocytes:

B-lymphocytes (B-cells): On encountering a specific antigen, they produce an army of antibodies (immunoglobulins) that are released into the blood to neutralise/destroy the pathogen. This is humoral (antibody-mediated) immunity.

T-lymphocytes (T-cells): They help B-cells produce antibodies (helper T-cells) and directly attack and destroy infected cells, grafts and pathogens (cytotoxic T-cells). This is cell-mediated immunity (CMI).
