For any given species, individuals of a population can generally be classified into three age groups — pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive. The proportion of individuals belonging to each of these groups, plotted for males and females, gives what is called an age pyramid (or age-structure diagram) for that population. The shape of this pyramid reflects, and helps predict, whether the population is growing, stable, or declining. In a rapidly expanding population the base (pre-reproductive class) is broad, tapering upward. In a stable population the pyramid has a roughly bell-shaped/rectangular outline with the pre-reproductive and reproductive classes about equal.
