Copper IUDs act via Cu ions that immobilise/kill sperm; hormonal IUDs make the uterus unfit for implantation and the cervix hostile to sperm.

Intra-uterine devices (IUDs) are inserted into the uterus by a doctor and are effective, popular contraceptives. They work by different mechanisms:

Copper-releasing IUDs (e.g. CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375): They release copper ions (Cu²⁺) into the uterus. These ions suppress the motility and fertilising capacity of sperms and increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus, so fertilisation is prevented.
