Deprotonate phenol to phenoxide, then let it displace iodide from methyl iodide (an SN2S_N2 reaction) — the classic Williamson ether synthesis.

Step 1: Phenol is treated with sodium hydroxide to form sodium phenoxide, which is a much stronger, more nucleophilic species than neutral phenol:

C6H5OH+NaOH→C6H5O−Na++H2OC_6H_5OH + NaOH \rightarrow C_6H_5O^-Na^+ + H_2O

Step 2: Sodium phenoxide is then reacted with methyl iodide (or dimethyl sulphate). The phenoxide oxygen performs an SN2S_N2 attack on the electrophilic methyl carbon, displacing iodide:

C6H5O−Na++CH3I→C6H5−O−CH3 (methoxybenzene, anisole)+NaIC_6H_5O^-Na^+ + CH_3I \rightarrow C_6H_5-O-CH_3 \ (\text{methoxybenzene, anisole}) + NaI
