A plasticizer is a substance mixed into a rigid polymer to make it soft and flexible.

Plasticizers are low-volatility organic substances (commonly esters, e.g. dioctyl phthalate or dibutyl phthalate) added in small amounts to polymers such as PVC. They insert themselves between the long polymer chains, increasing the free volume and reducing the intermolecular (van der Waals/dipolar) forces that hold chains rigidly together.
