Question of 108

Q.Explain the following observations:

(i) The basic character of aniline or other aromatic amines are less than that of ammonia.
(ii) The molecular weights of C4H9NH2C_4H_9NH_2 and (C2H5)2NH(C_2H_5)_2NH are same whereas the boiling points of C4H9NH2C_4H_9NH_2 and (C2H5)2NH(C_2H_5)_2NH are different.

Aniline's nitrogen lone pair is tied up in ring resonance, weakening its basicity relative to ammonia; and even same-molecular-weight amine isomers can differ in boiling point due to differences in hydrogen-bonding ability and molecular shape.

(i) Aromatic amines are weaker bases than ammonia: In aniline, the lone pair on nitrogen is partly delocalised into the aromatic ring through resonance (conjugation with the π\pi-system), which stabilises the neutral amine but makes that lone pair less available to accept a proton. Protonation would disrupt this stabilising resonance, so aniline is a poorer proton acceptor than ammonia, whose lone pair is fully localised and freely available. Hence aromatic amines are markedly less basic than ammonia (and less basic than simple aliphatic amines too).
