AC sees inductive reactance limiting current; steady DC sees an ideal inductor as a plain wire.

(i) Connected across an AC source: the inductor presents an inductive reactance XL=ωLX_L = \omega L to the alternating current, in addition to any coil resistance, limiting the current amplitude (I0=V0/ZI_0=V_0/Z, with Z=R2+XL2Z=\sqrt{R^2+X_L^2}). This reduces the current through the bulb, so it glows dimmer than it would if the inductor were replaced by a plain wire (or by an equal DC voltage).
