Average life is the reciprocal of the decay constant: τ=1/λ\tau = 1/\lambda.

For a sample undergoing radioactive decay, the number of undecayed nuclei falls as

N(t)=N0e−λtN(t) = N_0 e^{-\lambda t}

where λ\lambda is the decay constant (probability of decay per unit time per nucleus).

The average (mean) life τ\tau is the average time for which a nucleus exists before decaying, obtained by averaging tt over the decay distribution:

τ=∫0∞t N0λe−λt dt∫0∞N0λe−λt dt=1λ\tau = \dfrac{\displaystyle\int_0^\infty t\,N_0\lambda e^{-\lambda t}\,dt}{\displaystyle\int_0^\infty N_0\lambda e^{-\lambda t}\,dt} = \dfrac{1}{\lambda}
