The built-in voltage across a p-n junction's depletion layer that opposes further carrier diffusion.

When a p-n junction is formed, majority carriers diffuse across the junction due to the concentration gradient: electrons from the n-side diffuse into the p-side, and holes from the p-side diffuse into the n-side. This diffusion leaves behind fixed, uncompensated ions — positive donor ions on the n-side and negative acceptor ions on the p-side — near the junction, creating a narrow region depleted of free charge carriers, called the depletion region.
