The key difference between open and closed circulatory systems is whether blood ever leaves the vessels: it does in an open system, and it stays enclosed throughout in a closed system.

Open circulatory system:

  • The heart pumps blood (called haemolymph) into large sinuses/spaces collectively called the haemocoel.
  • Blood directly bathes the tissues and organs, rather than always flowing through defined vessels.
  • Blood flow is relatively slow and at low pressure, so it is less efficient at delivering oxygen/nutrients quickly.
  • Seen in most arthropods (e.g., cockroach) and molluscs.

Closed circulatory system:

  • Blood is always confined within a continuous network of blood vessels — arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry it back, and capillaries connect them at the tissue level, allowing exchange of substances across thin capillary walls.
  • Blood flow can be more precisely regulated and maintained at higher pressure, allowing faster, more efficient circulation. …
