Lysosomes are called 'suicidal bags of the cell' because they contain powerful hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes that, if released within the cell, can digest and destroy the cell's own components.

Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles produced by the Golgi apparatus, containing a wide range of hydrolytic enzymes (lipases, proteases, carbohydrases, etc.) that are active at the acidic pH found inside the lysosome. These enzymes are capable of digesting almost all kinds of organic material — carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.
