Location: The thyroid gland is located in the neck region, situated on either side of (and just below) the larynx/trachea, in front of the windpipe. It is one of the largest endocrine glands in the human body, and is composed of two lobes connected by a narrow isthmus.
Hormones secreted: The thyroid gland secretes the iodine-containing thyroid hormones — thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) — which regulate the body's basal metabolic rate, and are also important for normal growth and development (including brain development). The thyroid also secretes calcitonin, which helps regulate blood calcium levels.
