Cells and body fluids need to be kept within a fairly narrow range of osmotic concentration (solute-to-water ratio) for enzymes and other cellular processes to work properly. Osmoregulation is the set of physiological mechanisms — such as selective reabsorption and excretion by the kidney in humans, and specialised organs like nephridia or antennal glands in other animals — that keeps this internal balance stable even when the external environment (freshwater, marine, or terrestrial) or dietary intake of water and salts varies.
