Three types of muscle and where they are found:
-
Striated (skeletal) muscle: Attached to the bones of the skeleton, and responsible for voluntary body movements (e.g. muscles of the limbs). Appears striped (striated) under the microscope, due to the regular arrangement of contractile proteins.
-
Non-striated (smooth) muscle: Found in the walls of internal, hollow organs, such as the alimentary canal (gut), blood vessels, urinary bladder, and the respiratory tract. It is involuntary (not under conscious control) and lacks the striped appearance of skeletal muscle.
-
Cardiac muscle: Found exclusively in the wall of the heart. It is striated (like skeletal muscle) but involuntary and branched, and it contracts rhythmically and continuously throughout life without fatigue.
