Pneumatophores are upward-growing "breathing roots" found in halophytic (mangrove) plants, allowing them to obtain oxygen in waterlogged, saline soil.

This concept comes from the section on modification of roots in the Morphology of Flowering Plants chapter, under the category of roots modified for special functions.

Why they are needed: many plants that grow in swampy, saline coastal areas (halophytes such as Rhizophora, found in mangrove forests) live in soil that is waterlogged and consequently very poor in oxygen. Ordinary underground roots would struggle to respire in such anaerobic conditions.
