Adipose tissue is connective tissue specialised for fat storage.

Animal tissues fall into four basic types: epithelial (covering/lining), connective (binding and support), muscular (movement), and neural (control and coordination). Connective tissue is characterised by cells that are relatively few and widely spaced, embedded in an abundant intercellular matrix that they themselves secrete.

Adipose tissue fits this pattern exactly. It consists of large, rounded cells called adipocytes, each of which stores a large fat droplet, packed loosely with only a thin matrix between them. It is found beneath the skin and around organs such as the kidneys, where it acts as an insulator (reducing heat loss), a shock absorber, and the body's main energy reserve.
