Hydrides are classed as electron-deficient (fewer than 8 electrons around the central atom), electron-precise (exactly 8), or electron-rich (more than 8, with lone pairs) based on the octet at the central atom; amphoteric oxides react with both acids and bases.

(a) Classification of hydrides:

  • B2H6 (diborane): Boron has only 3 valence electrons and does not have enough electrons to complete an octet through normal 2-electron bonds (it uses unusual 3-centre-2-electron 'banana' bonds to bridge boron and hydrogen). This makes B2H6 an electron-deficient hydride.
  • CH4 (methane): Carbon forms exactly 4 single bonds to 4 hydrogen atoms, giving it exactly a complete octet with no lone pairs left over. This makes CH4 an electron-precise hydride.
  • H2O (water): Oxygen forms 2 bonds to hydrogen and retains 2 lone pairs — more electron pairs around the central atom than are needed just for bonding. This makes H2O an electron-rich hydride. …
