Kinetic theory of gases rests on assumptions such as: molecules are in continuous random motion, their own size is negligible, and their collisions are perfectly elastic.

Any three of the following standard assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases may be given:

  1. A gas is made up of a very large number of identical, tiny molecules that are in a state of continuous, random motion.
  2. The size (volume) of the individual molecules is negligible compared to the volume occupied by the gas — molecules are treated as point masses.
  3. Molecules exert no force on one another, or on the walls of the container, except during actual collisions (i.e. no intermolecular forces act between collisions).
  4. All collisions — between molecules, and between molecules and the container walls — are perfectly elastic, so kinetic energy (though not necessarily individual velocities) is conserved in each collision. …
