The controlling process has five steps, from setting standards to taking corrective action.

  1. Setting performance standards — the criteria against which actual performance will be measured are decided; standards can be quantitative (cost, revenue, output) or qualitative (customer satisfaction, employee morale).
  2. Measurement of actual performance — performance is measured as objectively and accurately as possible, using methods suited to the activity (output counted for production, revenue figures for sales, surveys for customer satisfaction).
  3. Comparing actual performance with standards — the actual results are compared with the standard to find out the deviation, if any, and whether it is within the acceptable range.
  4. Analysing deviations — management focuses attention particularly on significant deviations (the critical point control and management-by-exception principle), identifying the causes of a deviation — for example, defective material, poor supervision, or an unrealistic standard. …
