Grapevine refers to the informal channel of communication within an organisation — the network of conversations and rumours that travels through personal and social relationships rather than through the organisation's official reporting structure.

Formal communication flows through the officially defined channels of the organisation structure (superior to subordinate and so on), following the chain of command.
