Now, the Harmony Principle Extension takes this same idea and applies it to the world of business, management, and human relations.

In the NCERT textbook for Business Studies (Class 12), the Harmony Principle is one of the 14 principles of management given by Henri Fayol. The core principle says: "Union is strength" — meaning managers should create a sense of team spirit and belonging among employees. The extension of this principle goes deeper. It doesn't just stop at "be nice to each other." It asks: How do you actually build that harmony in a real organization?

The extension tells us that harmony is not automatic. It requires deliberate action. Specifically, it requires reconciling the interests of different groups — especially the interests of the workers and the interests of the management. These two groups often seem to have opposite goals: workers want higher wages and better conditions; management wants higher profits and lower costs. The Harmony Principle Extension says that a good manager does not treat this as a zero-sum game (where one wins and the other loses). Instead, the manager works to align these interests so that both sides feel they are working toward a common purpose.
