Every manager has a limit to how many people they can guide, coordinate, and keep track of effectively; beyond that limit, supervision becomes superficial and quality suffers. This limit is the "span" — a wide span means one manager supervises many subordinates directly (leading to a flatter organisation with fewer levels), while a narrow span means fewer subordinates per manager (leading to a taller organisation with more levels).
