Both poverty and affluence degrade the environment, but through opposite mechanisms — scarcity-driven over-use versus excess-driven over-consumption.

Poverty-induced degradation: Poor households, especially in rural areas with few alternative livelihood options, depend directly on local natural resources for survival — collecting fuelwood for cooking, grazing livestock on common land, and clearing forest for cultivation. Because they have no other means of subsistence, they are often forced to over-exploit these resources beyond their regenerative capacity, leading to deforestation, soil erosion and land degradation. This, in turn, further reduces the resource base available to them, creating a vicious cycle where poverty causes degradation and degradation deepens poverty.
