India's education sector has expanded hugely in coverage and literacy since independence, though quality and equity gaps still persist.

Growth of the education sector in India (since 1951):

  1. Literacy rate: Overall literacy rose from around 18% in 1951 to over 70% in recent decades — a dramatic improvement, though still below many other countries.
