High-powered money (H) = currency held by the public (C) + reserves of commercial banks (R).

High-powered money (H), also called the monetary base or reserve money, is the money issued by the central bank (and government, for coins), consisting of:

H = C + R

where C = currency (notes and coins) held by the public, and R = cash reserves that commercial banks keep (partly as vault cash, partly as deposits with the central bank).
