Balance of Trade = Exports of goods − Imports of goods. A deficit of Rs. 500 crore with exports of Rs. 400 crore implies imports of Rs. 900 crore.

Balance of Trade (BoT) is the difference between the value of a country's exports of goods (visible items) and its imports of goods, over a given period:

BoT = Exports − Imports

A trade deficit occurs when imports exceed exports, i.e., BoT is negative. Here, the deficit is Rs. 500 crore, so:

Exports − Imports = −500

400 − Imports = −500

Imports = 400 + 500 = Rs. 900 crore
