Organic farming avoids chemical inputs, relying on natural methods — offering sustainability, health and cost benefits.

What is organic farming? It is a system of agriculture that minimises or completely avoids the use of synthetic chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and genetically modified seeds. Instead, it relies on natural practices — crop rotation, use of organic manure/compost, green manuring, and biological methods of pest control — to maintain and improve soil fertility and manage pests and diseases.

Benefits of organic farming:

  1. Sustains long-term soil health: unlike chemical-intensive farming, which can deplete soil fertility and structure over time, organic practices (compost, crop rotation) build up and maintain soil fertility for the long run.

  2. Produces healthier, chemical-residue-free food: since no synthetic pesticide/fertiliser residues are used, organic produce is generally considered safer and healthier for consumers.

  3. Lowers input costs and farmer risk: because organic farming can use farm-generated inputs (compost, farm-saved seed) rather than costly purchased chemical inputs, it reduces the farmer's cash outlay and vulnerability to debt from input costs.
