Agricultural marketing covers the whole chain from farm to consumer; the government has improved it through regulated markets, storage infrastructure, and MSP-based procurement.

Meaning: Agricultural marketing is the process that covers all the activities involved in moving agricultural produce from the farmer/producer to the final consumer — including assembling the harvest, grading and standardising it by quality, storage, transportation, processing and the actual sale/distribution of the produce.

Three government measures to improve agricultural marketing:

  1. Regulated markets — the government has set up regulated markets (mandis under APMC-type laws) to protect farmers from unfair practices such as understating weight, arbitrary price deductions, and the exploitative commission charged by unregulated middlemen, ensuring more transparent price discovery.

  2. Provision of physical infrastructure — expansion of roads, railways, warehousing and cold storage facilities (through agencies like the Food Corporation of India and the Central Warehousing Corporation) to reduce spoilage and post-harvest losses, and to let farmers hold stock until prices are favourable instead of being forced into distress sales right after harvest.
