Definition
A biosphere reserve is a large protected area of land or coastal environment set up to conserve the diversity and integrity of plants, animals, and microorganisms within an ecosystem, along with the traditional lifestyle of the local and indigenous people who inhabit that area. Unlike a strict sanctuary or national park, a biosphere reserve balances conservation with sustainable human use, and is generally organized into three zones:
- a core zone — a legally protected area with minimal human disturbance, kept for strict conservation;
- a buffer zone — surrounding the core, where limited human activities like research and traditional, non-destructive resource use are permitted;
- a transition zone — the outermost area, where settlements, farming, and other economic activities of local communities may continue in a sustainable manner.
