As the human population grows, so does the demand for protein-rich food, straining conventional agricultural land and livestock resources. Microbes such as bacteria, yeast, fungi and algae can be grown in bulk on cheap and readily available substrates/culture media (e.g. molasses, whey, agricultural or industrial waste) to rapidly produce large quantities of protein-rich biomass, which can be harvested and used as a food or feed supplement for humans or animals. This microbial biomass is called single-cell protein (SCP).
